19: MJ SLIDE ON EVERYTHING FOR EVERYONE
I’m writing this piece from my bedroom where the air purifier has been working overtime as the air outside is poisoned from the wildfire smoke drifting down from Canada. I’m in conversation over text and voice memo with comrades here in the city deploying mutual aid to support community members with asthma and other health challenges. I am wearing an N95 inside, I am fighting despair, trying to feel all my feelings but also reminding myself another world must be possible, it must and we cannot give up. I refuse to believe this must be our only possible future, full of disease and poison air and soil and heartbreak.
Everything for Everyone by M. E. O’Brien and Eman Abdelhadi is a book I am endlessly coming back to and recommending to everyone. I literally cannot keep a physical copy of the book on my shelves because I am constantly giving it away. Everything for Everyone is a series of speculative oral histories set between 2052-2072 and these stories envision how we get free, how we defeat fascism, imperialism and capitalism and how we "communized the shit out of everything”. From Palestine to Hunts Point, The Bronx, NYC to all across the former United States and the world at large. I found the introduction “On Insurrection and Historical Memory” particularly insightful, it closes the gap between the 2030s and what led to our collective liberation within this proposed future.
Spectre Magazine hit it right on the head when they said this is a book that EVERYONE should read.
I find myself quietly penning stories inspired by this book, stories set here in Detroit in hopes of contributing to Project 2052, a living collection of Revolutionary Speculative Short Fiction, Visual Art, and Poetry, Set in the World of Everything for Everyone available for free to read here
